The tour starts at the Martyrs’ Memorial (positioned at the intersection of St Giles’, Magdalen Street and Beaumont Street, just outside Balliol College) with a general introduction to the city, its golden scientific record and a reference to the major scientific figures who’ve been associated with the colleges visible from there.

Then a walk towards the Museum of the History of Science, more information about the major figures associated with that area and its buildings (location of founding of Royal Society, Wren, aspirin, etc., etc.) – with a promise to finish back at the MHS*

Followed by a walk through the world-famous Bodleian Library which dates back to 15th Century. We stop to hear about the early days of science at Oxford and the importance of the library and its medieval schools in moving science forward (first dissections, etc.).

Then into the heart of Oxford’s scientific past: Radcliffe Square, the former Apothecaries’ Quarter, including the first building specially built for science at Oxford, the colleges of famous ground-breaking scientists and their achievements.

See plaque where Hooke/Boyle had their lab.

Halley’s House (optics of rainbow, barometric pressure, magnetic field, salinity of oceans)

15 Nobel prizes in Medicine, 11 in Chemistry, 5 in Physics and home to only British woman ever awarded Nobel in science subject.

* The walking tour can be followed by a free visit to the MHS, tick the box on registration and we will book you in as a group.
